Most of us do not think about our ceilings. Most ceilings are traditional ceiling white. You can improve the look of your room by painting your ceiling one or two shades lighter than the wall paint to lead your eye upward and give your room an updated look. You can also paint a contrasting color for a dramatice look, especially in a dining room. In a teen bedroom, the ceiling could be the same color as the walls for a cool look. 
A simple way to add character and richness to the ceiling is to add moldings. For a country cottage look you can add wood beams or wood panels. they can be natural or painted white. When renovating an older home, you can add textured wallpaper or tin to create an authentic feel.
