Create shelving using nontraditional materials. Use old ladders, crates, shutters, or doors to enhance the look of your home. Old doors can be cut to create several shelves. Crates can be layered and used for shelves. An old ladder is a very unique shelving solution. Shelves can be created with many materials. Use reclaimed wood from your salvage store. Use galvanized, copper or steel pipe. 
Shelves look best when items are grouped with three or more objects. Books can be stacked or vertical. Just use your imagination to create interesting book ends. Items from nature give a homey feel. Use coral, interesting wood pieces, pine cones, sticks, weeds or rocks. Hang pictures or other items on the shelves for interest.
All shelves do not need decorative items. Empty shelves make an impact.
